CLUB HISTORY
The
Rockville Montgomery Water Polo Club was formed in the early
1980’s by a group of summer league players who wished
to expand water polo opportunities year round. In the early
years the team was coached by a former Indiana University
player, Larry Marcus. During this period the club attracted
players with college water polo experience and international
players. Rockville traveled to water polo tournaments on the
east coast, achieving success in the southeastern zone of
USWP (United States Water Polo, the sport’s governing
body). |

Throughout
the 1990’s the team grew to an average size of 30 players,
both male and female. More than 30 countries have been represented
by foreign players, bringing international styles, skills,
and knowledge.
In the mid 1990’s Larry Marcus left the team to spend
more time with his family. The team was coached by a team
of coaches going forward, beginning with Gary Fernandes, David
Greenleaf, Bill Rutsch, Glenn Flick, and most recently, Kevin
Permisohn. Kevin “grew up” in the Rockville program,
was a star player for Bucknell University, and member if the
U.S. team attending the Maccabiah Games.
The future looks promising for Rockville Water Polo. Club
membership is solid, a strong women’s tournament team
has developed, and high school players develop their skills
for college play.
The biggest challenge for the club is in securing adequate
(and affordable) pool time at the Montgomery Aquatic Center,
the Rockville Municipal Swim Center, or new facilities that
are built in the Washington, D.C. area.
